The Second Coming

By William Butler Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Introduction

In W.B. Yeats' prophetic poem "The Second Coming," the falcon can no longer hear the falconer, and anarchy is loosed upon the world. Little did Yeats know that his verses would eerily align with the rise of Christian Nationalism in America, a movement that some claim sees Donald Trump as a messianic figure, the second coming in the realm of politics.

Turning and Turning: The Rise of Christian Nationalism

"The center cannot hold" – as Yeats wrote – mirrors the fragmentation witnessed as Christian Nationalism gains momentum. From claims of divine endorsement to merging religious fervor with political power, the lines between faith and governance blur. Yeats' words resonate as the falconer, symbolizing reason and order, loses control over the falcon – a representation of the Christian Nationalist movement veering away from rational discourse.

Mere Anarchy: Trump as the Second Coming

"The Second Coming" unfolds like a harbinger of Trumpism. "Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold" echoes the societal disintegration as fervent believers hail Trump as a savior. "The ceremony of innocence is drowned" reflects the abandonment of critical thinking, giving rise to blind allegiance. As the rough beast slouches toward Bethlehem – the political arena – Trumpism emerges as a force challenging the very foundations of democracy.

The Rockefeller Connection: Education as a Tool for Subjugation

Enter the Rockefeller General Education Board, a silent orchestrator in shaping the minds that fuel this movement. Established to mold an efficient, factory-ready workforce, its intended consequence has been the erosion of critical thinking. As Yeats' poem suggests an impending chaos, the GEB’s legacy aligns with a society ill-equipped to discern manipulation, creating a breeding ground for the likes of Trump.

"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public"

H.L. Mencken's cynical wisdom echoes through the ages. The lack of intellectual rigor, fostered by a diluted education system, has left the public susceptible to demagogues. As the American populace succumbs to this cycle, the prophecy in "The Second Coming" unfolds, portraying a society deceived by charismatic figures.

Anthropocentrism: Fear's Offspring

This vulnerability is further compounded by anthropocentrism – the human tendency to view the world solely from one's perspective. Born of fear, this myopic worldview amplifies susceptibility to manipulation. The fear of the unknown, of losing societal standing, becomes a powerful tool in the hands of those seeking to exploit.

In conclusion, the intertwining threads of Christian Nationalism, Trumpism, and the legacy of the Rockefeller General Education Board form a tapestry of societal upheaval. As Yeats' poem forewarned, the widening gyre of chaos is a consequence of a falconer losing control, an education system designed for compliance, and a populace susceptible to manipulation. Breaking this cycle requires a collective awakening to the perilous dance orchestrated by these unholy alliances.
