MEANINGLESS WORK

Why the Power Elite Wants Us to Fear AI

If you've ever felt stuck in a job that seems to exist just for the sake of existing, you’re not alone. Anthropologist David Graeber called these “bullshit jobs”—roles that add little value but keep people busy and compliant. These jobs benefit the Power Elite, who rely on a population tied to daily routines that discourage independent thought or the pursuit of personal potential.

Now, AI and automation are advanced enough to handle many of these repetitive roles, promising a shift from work that drains us to work that fulfills us. But instead of encouraging this transition, the Elite are pushing fear: fear of AI, fear of job loss, fear of societal collapse. This is a case of what sociologists call “Elite Panic,” where those in power react to potential threats by fostering fear among the public to maintain control.

The rise of AI offers us an opportunity to break away from this cycle of meaningless work. If we embrace it, we could create a society where human beings are free to explore creativity, intellect, and real purpose. Rather than something to fear, AI can be our ally in reclaiming our humanity.

The Human Advantage: What Machines Can’t Replace

The flood of AI-generated art, writing, and media has put a premium on human-generated art. While AI is able to produce vast quantities of content, what it lacks is the emotional depth, intuition, and originality that only humans can offer. Art, empathy, humor, storytelling—these aren’t just skills; they’re deeply rooted human experiences that can’t be coded or automated. Our capacity for these uniquely human skillsets highlights what machines can not replace.

The onus is on us to seize this moment and break away from the mechanized thought patterns that have ruled since the industrial age. Imagine a society that functions not on meaningless roles but on true human pursuits—learning, creating, connecting. We have a chance to create an economy based on what we want to do, not what we have to do.

How Rockefeller’s Influence Shaped Us

This industrialized mindset didn’t happen by accident. Over a century ago, Rockefeller’s General Education Board (GEB) aimed to create an obedient, conformist workforce by shaping our education system around repetition and compliance. From the start, this system trained us to prioritize productivity and obedience over independent thought, making us perfect cogs in a machine that requires little creativity or critical thinking.

This conditioning runs deep, but with the rise of AI, we have a chance to see beyond it. Instead of being rivals with AI, we can view it as a partner that handles tasks we no longer need to occupy our lives with. But it requires a mental shift to break free of the conformity that Rockefeller’s legacy ingrained in us. The time is now to reclaim our minds, our creativity, and our humanity.

Three Steps to Use AI

So how do we start using AI as our ally in this transformation? Here are three practical steps to help break free from the industrialized mindset:

1. Start Small, but Go Deep
Use AI tools like ChatGPT not just for practical questions but to dig into your unique interests. Whether it’s suggesting new books or helping brainstorm ideas, let AI be a spark for exploration and inspiration, encouraging you to think in fresh ways rather than in narrow, job-focused terms.

2. Learn Outside the Box
Rather than pursuing the same knowledge everyone else is, use AI to develop new skills that align with your passions. For example, if you’re interested in art, music, or philosophy, ask AI to guide you deeper into these areas. By breaking from standardized information, we regain the freedom to explore, think critically, and develop perspectives that resist industrial conformity.

3. Create for Creation’s Sake
AI can offer ideas and tools, but let your vision drive the process. Make something purely for the joy of it—whether writing, painting, or crafting. Moving away from productivity-focused thinking reconnects us with creativity and reminds us of our human capacity for invention and wonder.

Building an Economy on What We Want to Do

Imagine if we could build an economy based on what we want to do, not on what we have to do. AI makes this possible by taking over repetitive, mundane roles, freeing us to engage in more meaningful work. For the first time, we can step away from the old industrialized system and create lives where our work aligns with our purpose.

The Power Elite rely on our fear and conformity, but AI opens a door to a different world. All that’s left is for us to walk through it. By embracing AI as an ally, we can break away from meaningless work and build a society that allows every human being to thrive on their own terms.

In conclusion, the concept of "Bullshit Jobs" highlights the often absurd nature of work that lacks meaningful contribution to society, leaving many feeling trapped in a cycle of unfulfilling labor. However, the emergence of AI offers a potential path to liberation from these machinations. By automating mundane tasks and enhancing efficiency, AI can free individuals from jobs that do not utilize their full potential, allowing them to focus on more creative and impactful pursuits. In this way, AI serves not just as a tool but as a catalyst for redefining work and enabling us to pursue endeavors that truly resonate with our values and aspirations, ultimately fostering a society where meaningful contributions are prioritized over mere busywork.

Note: As of recent studies, around 50-60% of Americans report dissatisfaction or disengagement at work. Gallup’s 2023 State of the Global Workplace report found that 59% of U.S. employees are "quietly quitting," meaning they’re disengaged, while only about 34% are actively engaged in their jobs.
